The challenge in July's contest was to create an image that has all the trademarks of the popular Anime form of entertainment.    Close attention should have been paid to character modelling and surface shades so that the entries -REALLY- look like a frame out of an anime movie.

    Artist's Comments "LIGHTWAVE-SURFING"

I paid close attention to character modelling and I think I really reached Anime. These girls nearly burned my processor, not only because of about 300000 Polygons in the final scene.

I used Lightwave 5.6 (with SUPER-CEL-SHADER), and PhotoShopLE to create maps (eyes, logos).

The image is 100%-Lightwave-Rendered and it was not retouched. Modelling and placing the girls in the right position consumed the most time, but however it was fun :).

Finally the Shading was very easy with "LWSuperCelShader" (e.g. the parameters of skin: -Highlight Paint Brightness was set to 1.2; -Highlight Paint Saturation set to 0.4; -Surface Luminosity was set to 30%; -everything else was left default).

    Enjoy the Image!

    "Angel Vision"

Created with LightWave 5.5 and Adobe Photoshop; partially inspired by the depiction of the "angels" in _Vision of Escaflowne_ (where angel feathers fly everywhere).

All texture maps were created in Adobe Photoshop; texture maps were done for the hair (a color map and a luminosity map for the hair glint, both Cylindrical mapped with World Coordinates turned on and adjusted with a Reference Null), clothing, and face (a color map, a luminosity map for the eye highlights, and a diffuse map as a quick solution to the lack of shadow under her lip. If I wanted to animate her or the lighting on her face, though, I would have painted a bump map instead).

The feathers are not celshaded. In _Escaflowne_ the feathers had a slight glow; I tried to recreate that same effect here through high (200%) luminosity and the Glow Effect. The feather on the right has less Glow than the other three--too much Glow obscured its edges.

The lightbeam surrounding the central figure is a cylinder that's 100% Transparent, 200% Luminous, 0% Diffuse, and has "Opaque Edges" turned on, as well as Glow.

The Underwater procedural texture was used for the platform.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or comments. :)

Artist's Comments Here is my entry for the contest.

It is part of a project I'm working on.

There's just one light in the scene. It's a white spot with light intensity set to 100% and enabled shadow maps. Contrary to what some others advice I set the ambient light intensity to 0%. I wanted to obtain very high contast zones, so I use the following SuperCelShader settings for every surface in the scene:

    Zone 1 Paint Brightness 0
    Zone 2 Paint Brightness 0,4
    Zone 3 Paint Brightness 0,6
    Zone 4 Paint Brightness 1

    Zone 1 Min Diffuse 0
    Zone 1 Max Diffuse 0,1
    Zone 2 Min Diffuse 0,2
    Zone 2 Max Diffuse 0,4
    Zone 3 Min Diffuse 0,46
    Zone 3 Max Diffuse 0,96
    Zone 4 Min Diffuse 1
    Zone 4 Max Diffuse infinite

    Transition Min Specular 0,3
    Transition max Specular 0,5
    Highlight Paint Brightness 1,2
    Highlight Paint Saturation 0,4

Cel Look Specular Edges On (for the Mech cockpit I set it off)
