January's Topic was: Blow 'em up REAL GOOD!
The challange in January's contest was to create the most realistic and impressive fiery explosion effect possible with LightWave.     It was okay to use other programs (like PhotoShop or After Effects) but entrants were encouraged to try and do as much of the work as possible with only LightWave.

    "Project CrossRoads 1946"

This was a nuclear test that Usa made in 1946.

I tried to make a "dark" feel for the image using a "colorize" filter in Paint Shop Pro , this is the only post pro effect.
The whole image is made in lightwave.

I have not a web site at the moment , is under construction and hope will be online in the next 2 or 3 months.

    "Eagle Explosion"

Fully created with LightWave 5.6 and Hyper Voxel 2. Only a final touch to brighteness and contrast with Photoshop.

The background was a variation of the tutorials published in the dec/jan issue of newtekniques about nebulae and clouds.

The Eagle object is a 3D Studio format FREE object , then imported in modeler, retouched and deformed.

The explosion was made with Particle Storm Lite and Hyper Voxel 2.

Since I'm a really beginner with LW (I've started using it 2 month ago, but unfortunatly I've very few time to spend in learning it....!!!). I've excedeed with the number of particles for the explosion. This is the reason for the very long render time of the image. May be that the image can be improoved in various way, but the deadline of the contest is arrived, and this is the results.

Feel free to publish and use this image as you want !!!

Thanking in advance, best regards and greetings from Italy. Also, my best compliments for the idea of the LW Image Contest.

"Supervillain" is my first entry to the LightWave Mailing List Contest. This is actually quite a simple scene, even if it doesn't appear to be so. It was created (excluding modeling time from the actual supervillain model) in less than one hour.

The fire background image is from Dan Ablan's LightWave Power Guide (from that great "Pawn" tutorial), and the explosion and smoke are made from 2 null objects in HyperVoxels 2.0, with heavy modifications of presets.

The sparks were created in Modeler as a sphere with its polygons killed. They were imported into Layout and cloned 5 times. The objects were then stretched and moved in various directions, and keyframed after 2 seconds. A heavy motion blur of 250% was then applied.

The supervillain itself is a model I'm currently working on. All the light in the scene is from behind him so it is a completely silhouetted figure.

Rendering time was horrendous at 16 hours and 21 minutes, even on my Pentium II 400MHz. To help bring out the supervillain theme as well as give a little originality to the picture, I then used Photoshop to scan in an old "Fantastic Four" comic (Kudos goes to anyone who used to be enough of a F4 freak that they can tell me what number this comic was!), and pasted the render into a square in the comic book.

There you have it -- "Supervillain".
