The model was built using a plastic kit from AMT. Zero points for
originality but the effort was a good exercise (for me) to jump back into
Lightwave. With the spline cage for the body and the occasional metaNURBed
part, the model weighs in at a little over 60,000 polygons -- and it's still
not complete.
The ship, of course, is the Slave One vessel which made a brief appearance
during the second Star Wars film. The challenge was to recreate most of the
detail from the plastic kit model. It's slightly off at a few places (and
the hull needs more subdivisions) but it's pretty close. I had to take
liberties with some of the "nernies" (to use a Ron Thorton word). The model
had some empty surfaces that needed to be broken up.
Note that just about every surface has a bevel on it. Recently I sent my
demo reel to some pro CG people and they reamed me for the lack of detail in
the animation. Learned my lesson... but unfortunately I didn't get a chance
to finish. On and off, modeling took a little over one week. Maybe next
month I'll finish something.
